U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) is emphasizing the importance of teaching civics in grade school and preparing students for the future. During a gubernatorial campaign event in Mobile, the Republican nominee told fellow Republicans that after 35 years in education, he wants the state to improve its attitude toward education so students get the chance they deserve. He said that because schools lack civics courses, students can't learn how the country was made or why the Constitution is so important. “You know why we have that? But they were not taught anything where they could argue back and I'm not talking about teaching civics in the ninth, 10th, 11th grade. “We have to have welders and plumbers that make $40, $50, $60 an hour, and we’ve got to start training them. Instead of going to college for a degree students struggle to use, Tuberville said he wants the education system to focus on encouraging students to use their hands and make a living.
